Position Overview: Reporting directly to the Head of the Technical Services Department, the Metadata and Media Cataloging Librarian implements metadata standards for various projects and catalogs library resources in various formats, including media. This position is also responsible for cataloging all Manga resources for the Eaton Science Fiction Collection and maps cataloging, especially those in Japanese and Korean.
Responsibilities:
  • Performs original and copy cataloging of monographs and serials in Japanese. Performs original and copy cataloging of Anime and Manga for the Eaton Collection.
  • Writes and maintains documentation of policies and procedures relating to the cataloging and processing of Anime and Manga resources.
  • Works with the Special Collections staff to provide quality and timely access to the Eaton Collection media resources.
  • Helps to develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for metadata schema for the Cataloging Unit.
  • Describes/Catalogs digitized resources and other formats as appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge of and provides guidance to the use of various established and evolving metadata schema.
  • Performs original and copy cataloging of video recordings and other media.
  • Serves as a resource for media cataloging and keeps informed of media issues.
  • Works with the Multimedia Library staff to provide quality and timely access to media resources.
  • Works with the Archives staff to insure quality and timely access to digitized and archived resources.
  • Performs original and copy cataloging of maps, specifically those in Japanese and Korean.
  • Works with the Map Library staff to insure quality and timely access to maps and atlases.
  • Provides back-up cataloging for Music Library resources in the absence of the Music cataloger.
Required Qualifications:
  • ALA accredited MLS or equivalent;
  • Reading and writing knowledge of Japanese and romanization of Japanese;
  • Experience in cataloging  media, books, serials, and maps;
  • Experience with a bibliographic utility (preferably OCLC) and Innovative Interfaces or similar integrated library system;
  • Knowledge of AACR2, national standards and practices;
  • Experience with the application of metadata schemes to organize and provide access to digital collections;
  • Commitment to enhancing services through teamwork and responsiveness to clients;
  • Good oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate clearly and in a timely and effective manner;
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse workforce and to professional development in support of the University’s and the Libraries' goals of excellence and diversity. 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong, independent, analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Recent MLS graduate;
  • Reading and writing knowledge of  Korean, and romanization of Korean.  
Salary and Benefits:  Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of $47,087-$60,408.  Appointment at Assistant Librarian II – Associate Librarian V rank depending upon qualifications and experience.  Excellent retirement system, health, and vacation benefits.  Within close driving distance to Los Angeles (60 miles) and beach areas.
