Deputy Librarian: Hong Kong University Libraries

Applications are invited for appointment as Deputy Librarian in the University Libraries tenable from May 1, 2011, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal.

Applicants should have a solid university degree plus a recognised professional qualification in library and information science (MLS or equivalent), with at least 10 years of appropriate post-qualification experience in academic libraries of which at least 5 years should be at a managerial level, carrying considerable responsibility.  The Deputy Librarian reports to, as well as advises and assists, the University Librarian, and from time to time represents the University Librarian and the Library within the University, locally, regionally or internationally, as required.  The Deputy Librarian is a key member of the Library senior management team, who provides high-level vision and dynamic leadership.  In addition to advising and assisting the University Librarian on development aspects of the management and administration of the Library, the Deputy Librarian will engage in strategic planning and implementation of strategic initiatives as well as the coordination of system-wide operations and services specifically through the 5 major library teams being Main Library Services, Bibliographic Discovery Services, Collection Development, Branch Libraries Services, and Scholarly Communications Teams.  The appointee should have a proven track record of leadership; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong organizational ability; a demonstrated commitment to supporting teaching, learning and research; and knowledge of the latest trends and developments in information technology and in particular those applicable to an educational environment.  Written and spoken Chinese skills will be a distinct advantage.

Annual salary for Deputy Librarian will be in the range of HK$708,240 – 1,171,800 (approximately US$1 = HK$7.8) (subject to review from time to time at the entire discretion of the University).  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as leave, and medical/dental benefits.  Housing benefits will also be provided as applicable.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.
