The Ohio State University Libraries is currently seeking applications for an East Asian Studies Program Assistant, a Japanese Cataloger and a part time Korean Cataloger within our Area Studies Department and Cataloging Department.

East Asian Studies Program Assistant
The East Asian Studies Program Assistant assists in the selection, management and use of distinctive collections by coordinating and implementing activities such as acquisitions, cataloging, searching, reference, outreach and access support at high levels of complexity and responsibility. The British Library: Head of Asian & African Studies

Devonshire Arts and Heritage is delighted to be recruiting for a Head of Asian and African Studies for an internationally renowned library in London.

The Library contains over 150 million items including manuscripts, printed books, newspapers, maps, photographs, stamps, sound recordings, prints, drawings and ephemera from all over the World. The post holder has overall management responsibility for a total of 21 specialist curatorial staff; 6 of which will be direct reports.

The post is permanent and full time. First stage interviews will take place on the first week of March, so you must be fully available then, and if successful be available to start within a reasonable amount of time after that.

The Post Holder Will:

•    Motivate, build trust, inspire and ultimately lead a team of Asian and African specialists
•    Have the ability to identify what is important and achievable for the curatorial team to conserve the collection, in order for it to continue being the best of its kind
•    Support and mentor team members through regular one to one and group meetings
•    Continue to build and strengthen relationships with other internal departments
•    Develop service propositions to exploit the collections across a range of formats, seeking and brokering partnerships with other libraries, research institutions and technology partners as appropriate
•    Act as an effective advocate for the Library and communicate with stakeholders nationally and internationally
•    Leading negotiations re: major acquisitions of heritage and archival material, liaising with the Development Office, Communications etc., as appropriate
•    Be able to make strategic decisions,  implement and oversee the completion of plans accordingly
•    Develop and implement innovative and creative approaches to strengthen the Library’s user experience

Essential Requirements Include:

•    First degree level qualification or above in a relevant discipline or subject
•    Exemplary collection management experience
•    You must have a proven area of academic and practical expertise relevant to the collection
•    Previous employment experience in a library, museum, academic institution or in the fine art/antiquities sector
•    Experience in leading and overseeing the development of corporate plans, strategies and programmes
•    Knowledge of new developments in digitisation and emerging research trends and methodologies
•    Experience of budgetary and financial management
•    Oral and written fluency in the English language
•    Information technology skills, including web-based skills
•    Ability to travel for work purposes as and when required

Univ. of Michigan: Head, Asia Library

OVERVIEW
The Head provides and strategic leadership for the Asia Library in support of its role as a premier resource for East Asian Studies at the University of Michigan. The Head is responsible for ensuring that excellent user-centered services meet the constantly evolving needs of the University’s large and diverse user community.  In addition, the Head informs the campus and broader community of the Asia Library’s resources and services.  Providing executive oversight of substantial collections, endowments, gifts, and various budgets is critical to this position, as is fostering a collegial and productive environment for library staff.  The Head manages a staff of 11 FTE, including 3 professional librarians, and manages services and programs of the Asia Library in partnership with library-wide services and programs. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research.

CONTEXT
The University of Michigan’s Asia Library has a long and distinguished tradition of building and providing access to comprehensive collections relevant to East Asian Studies. The Asia Library holds approximately one million physical volumes of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean monographs, serials, microforms, and other media. The Library also provides access to thousands of electronic databases, books, and serials in East Asian languages.  The collection of East Asia materials in western languages is also quite strong.  The Head directs the work of the librarians who are responsible for collection development budgets totaling more than $1,000,000 annually.

These collections are particularly strong in the humanities and social sciences and support doctoral level studies. The Asia Library has a strong history of successful partnerships with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the International Institute, the Center for Chinese Studies, the Center for Japanese Studies, and the Korean Studies Program. The long-standing partnerships are essential for sustaining the entire range of research needs of faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and staff; fostering and innovating scholarly communication; effectively using instructional technologies; embracing new research resources while supporting traditional research methods; and encouraging interdisciplinary research and collaboration across campus and beyond. This collection not only serves the faculty and students of the university but also scholars throughout North America. The Asia library belongs to a number of cooperative programs such as the Council on East Asia Libraries, the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources, and the Korean Collections Consortium of North America. The Asia Library is considered to be among the top five libraries of its kind in the United States.

The incumbent has a unique opportunity to lead and to participate in the creation of visionary Library programs and initiatives that promote collections, user services, scholarly communication, publishing, data management, and the University’s research enterprise. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
* Position the Asia Library as a recognized leader in the delivery of scholarly content through an appropriate array of services, programs, and creative applications of technology.
* Foster productive and collaborative relationships with directors, chairs, faculty, and administrators in the relevant Centers and programs and within the College of Literature, Sciences and the Arts, as well as across campus.
* Provide leadership for the Asia Library and within the University Library by guiding, inspiring and supporting the Asia Library staff.
* Serves as the Collection Coordinator for Asia Library by managing acquisitions budgets, gifts, and endowments, as well as by managing electronic resources.
* Develops innovative long-range efforts, and assessment of programs and services in carrying out the library’s objectives.
* Represents the Asia Library and the University Library through professional service and affiliations, including:  engagement in scholarly activities; professional affiliations and involvement at national and international levels; developing and maintaining collegial relationships with East Asian librarians from peer institutions.
* Ensures that the Asia Library builds and maintains a dynamic online presence, promoting and enhancing the collections and services of the Library.
* Encourages and cultivates close relations with donors of funds and materials relating to Asia Library collections; collaborates with Director of Library Development and the AUL for Collections, as appropriate, on fundraising activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
1. ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or an advanced degree in East Asian studies or related field of study.
2. Proficiency (speaking, writing, and reading) in one of the following languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) in support of East Asian scholarly programs.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students of culturally diverse backgrounds.
4. Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication (oral and written) skills.
5. Strong user-centered commitment to outreach and service excellence.
6. Record of scholarly and professional achievement, e.g. scholarly publications, presentations, service, or teaching experience.
7. Familiarity with scholarly communication and academic publishing practices throughout East Asia.

Desired:
1. Ph.D. in East Asian Studies or related field, or equivalent knowledge in a related field of study combined with library experience
2. Minimum three years of management experience in an academic library or the broader scholarly community.
3. Experience in successfully leading collaborative efforts to enhance user services and to develop innovative initiatives and programs.
4. Proficiency with two or more of the following languages: Chinese, Korean, Japanese.

Univ. of Michigan: Chinese Studies Librarian

The University of Michigan Library (MLibrary) seeks a Chinese Studies Librarian to provide exceptional outreach to faculty and students who are focused on the study of China across the social sciences and humanities. The Chinese Studies Librarian will assume direct responsibility for the development and maintenance of the Chinese Studies collection; evaluation and selection of information sources related to Chinese Studies; and reference and research consultation in support of instructional programs designed for Chinese Studies. The incumbent will serve as the primary liaison with the Center for Chinese Studies and respond to the Center’s needs in coordination of its activities.
The Asia Library is one of the most comprehensive collections of East Asian materials in North America, and the Chinese Studies collection is among the largest in the nation.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The individual hired for this position will provide academic support services to faculty and students who are engaged in Chinese Studies research and teaching in coordination with other Asia Library staff as well as with the broader MLibrary community. Reporting to the Head of Asia Library, the successful candidate will assume the following responsibilities:

Collection Development and Acquisitions
• Provide leadership for collection development and ongoing collection management of the Chinese
Studies Collection. Establish and maintain priorities for the Chinese Studies Collection and
periodically review and assess the collection’s needs.
• Identify budget needs for the collection and make recommendations to the Head of Asia Library
for budget allocation. Manage and monitor the appropriate acquisitions funds.
• Stay abreast of important changes in academic programs, faculty research, and other academicallyrelated
matters effecting collection development.
• Collaborate with the Coordinator of Asia Library Technical Services and MLibrary Technical
Services Division to establish cataloging priorities and fine-tune work procedures for Chinese
materials in all formats.

Public Services
• Provide in-person and virtual instruction and reference services to faculty and students, as well as
to patrons outside the university community on topics related to Chinese Studies.
• Initiate instruction opportunities pertaining to Chinese Studies or Chinese resources for faculty
and students.
• Communicate and publicize new and significant acquisitions in Chinese Studies; apprise faculty
and students of library-wide services (e.g., Interlibrary Loan, Deep Blue, Mpublishing) and new
initiatives, such as data management services.
• Receive official guests as requested. Provide assistance for visiting Chinese Studies scholars and
librarians.
• Establish and maintain good relationships in written and spoken Chinese with international
libraries, research institutions, publishers, and vendors; maintain knowledge of the book market,
publishing trends, and electronic resources for Chinese Studies.

Professional Development & Service
• Serve on MLibrary committees; attend relevant meetings involving university Centers,
departments, and institutes; attend and participate in Asia Library, Research Unit, and library-wide
meetings.
• Represent the University Library in regional, national, and international organizations of relevant
to Chinese or East Asian Studies collections.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
1. ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, or an advanced degree in a
relevant humanities or social sciences discipline.
2. Knowledge of scholarly resources, reference tools, and electronic resources for Chinese Studies.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and
students of diverse cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.
4. Speaking, reading and writing fluency in Chinese.

Rice University: Asian Studies Curator

Rice University, a private university located in Houston, Texas, is seeking a highly motivated librarian committed to building academic library collections and services tailored to the present and future needs of our community.  The successful candidate will work to build library collections for the recently created Chao Center for Asian Studies, including assisting with library services, and working with the staff of the Chao Center and Fondren Library to promote Rice University’s developing program.  The successful candidate will contribute to primary resource collections, including digitization projects, in Fondren’s special collections.  Position reports to AUL for Collections.

The Reference and Research Services librarian serves as the primary liaison to a group of academic departments appropriate to the incumbent’s academic background, with responsibilities for building collections in all formats that support research and curricular needs; delivering a program of instruction, consultation, and research support services; developing responsive outreach and other information services; and taking a leadership role on projects and initiatives as appropriate.   Collaborative work with colleagues at NYU New York, NYU Abu Dhabi, and across NYU’s global network is an important job expectation.  Librarians at NYU participate in library and system-wide committees, and professional activities outside of the university.

Required Qualifications:
•    ALA-accredited MLS or ALA-recognized international equivalent
•    Previous experience in instruction, collection development, and/or reference services
•    High degree of facility with technologies and systems in academic library and information services, instruction, and research services
•    Strong analytical and problem solving skills
•    Demonstrated excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills
•    Demonstrated history of flexibility, creativity, and strong customer service commitment

Preferred:
•    Academic background in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) discipline

In consultation and consistent with the NYU library mission and programs, the Director of the NYU Shanghai Library will provide senior leadership in 1) establishing library services and programs that fully support NYU Shanghai’s academic and programmatic mission and 2) implementing and directing ongoing operations of the library.   The position reports jointly to the Dean, Division of Libraries at NYU and the Provost, NYU Shanghai. 

The position will direct the design and implementation of the library program for NYU Shanghai, including program start-up and expansion, staff recruitment and development, facilities requirements, development of joint services with NYU New York, resource management for the library’s budget, and development of policies for all library operations and services.  The Director of the NYU Shanghai Library will work closely with colleagues in the NYU Division of Libraries and at NYU Abu Dhabi to develop services that optimize library staff and resources across the NYU Libraries.  The Director also works closely with the senior staff of NYU Shanghai to plan and implement phased-in on-site services.  The incumbent will be based in Shanghai but may spend substantial time in New York City as well as Shanghai during the initial planning phase. 


Principal Duties

•    Responsible for the planning, project management, coordination and implementation of library services and policies at NYU Shanghai in conjunction with NYU New York Division of Libraries counterparts, including the full range of collection development, technical services, public services, front end academic technology support services, library IT and digital library services, and facilities.
•    Participate in NYU Shanghai campus and program planning and ongoing program development.
•    Recruit, develop and manage an outstanding library staff, and provide direction for the continuing recruitment, selection, orientation, development, training and retention of library staff.
•    Lead the effective and efficient ongoing operation of all aspects of library service on the NYU Shanghai campus consistent with the mission and service philosophy of NYU Shanghai and NYU New York
•    Develop and manage the NYU Shanghai library budget in collaboration with NYU New York.
•    Oversee the development of print and digital collections, including participation in joint institutional collection development, acquisitions and processing

POSITION FOCUS
The Japanese Technical Services Librarian provides original and complex copy cataloging for Japanese script materials in all formats and supervises support staff involved in all aspects of technical processing (serial and monographic acquisitions and cataloging) for the Japanese Collection.  The Librarian also provides statistical reports and other management information on Japanese technical services, provides testing and analysis related to Japanese scripts in library-wide systems, and participates in Yale library policy making on cataloging issues.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited Library school. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS. Appointment to this rank is limited to two years at which time it is expected that the individual will develop necessary requirements to meet expectations of performance at the Librarian 2 level.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1.    Appointment to Librarian 2 requires a minimum of two years of professional library experience and professional accomplishments. Appointment at Librarian 3 level requires a minimum of five years professional experience and professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.
2.    Excellent communication skills (reading, writing, speaking) in Japanese and understanding of the ALA-LC Romanization scheme for Japanese (modified Hepburn). Excellent communication skills in English.
3.    Excellent knowledge of MARC, AACR2, LCRI, LCSH, LCC, and PCC standards, and good understanding of authority control. Familiarity with current trends and best practices in cataloging and metadata services. Experience with bibliographic services such as OCLC and network-based cataloging tools.
4.    Excellent computer skills, including experience with personal computer hardware and software as needed to perform library functions.
5.    Demonstrated ability to succeed in a collaborative, team-based environment. Ability to set priorities and adhere to deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
1.    Knowledge of Japanese studies scholarship trends.
2.    Experience in Japanese acquisitions processes.
3.    Familiarity with Japanese rare book descriptive cataloging standards and practices.
4.    Familiarity with non-Latin script searching and indexing.
5.    Experience using non-MARC metadata schemas.
6.    Familiarity with RDA and Library of Congress Policy Statements (LCPS).

Univ. of Pennsylvania: Japanese Studies Librarian


The University of Pennsylvania Libraries seek an innovative and energetic Japanese Studies Librarian with broad knowledge and experience in developing and managing library resources to support teaching and research for faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students in Japanese Studies, with preference to candidates who also specialize in Korean Studies.

Reporting to the Director of Collection Development & Management, the Japanese Studies Librarian selects and acquires scholarly resources from and about Japan in a wide range of subjects and formats in both Japanese and Western languages, in support of Penn’s current and anticipated academic programs in consultation with faculty members. Leading candidates will also have facility in Korean in support of the growing academic program at Penn.

The Japanese Studies Librarian provides specialized reference, instruction, and academic liaison services to Penn faculty and students, both undergraduate and graduate, with research interests in Japan in all departments and schools where Japan is included as a topic of study. The growing Korean Collection and its constituents have comparable service needs and expectations.

The Japanese Studies Librarian participates in the process of acquisition and bibliographic control of all types of resources in Japanese, using the Voyager library management system and the OCLC bibliographic utility. The incumbent supervises a full‐time Library Specialist and may perform original cataloging and complex copy cataloging while also providing appropriate classification and subject analysis according to national and local standards.

The Japanese Studies Librarian must have knowledge of current and developing patterns of scholarship and publishing in relevant fields of study and be committed to the international and interdisciplinary strengths of Penn’s academic programs. The successful candidate will combine a focus on traditional formats with support for digital approaches to humanities and social science research and the development of collections in digital media, and is expected to seek out external funding opportunities and develop collaborative partnerships worldwide. The incumbent will have the opportunity to teach a graduate‐level course in Japanese bibliography and problems of research.

Qualifications 
Required: 
  • Accredited Master’s degree in library or information science with a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience or the equivalent in education and training. Note: To qualify for the rank of D, at least five years of relevant experience is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Japanese history, literature, and culture.
  • Knowledge of the Japanese publishing industry and trends in scholarship.
  • Fluent command of both written and spoken Japanese and English.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with national cataloging rules and practices (AACR2, RDA, MARC21, LC classification & Subject Headings), including Romanization standards.
  • Ability to work independently and collegially.
Preferred: 
  • Graduate degree in East Asian Studies.

Brown Univ.: East Asian Collections Cataloger (Term Appointment)


The Brown University Library seeks an experienced library professional to catalog print materials and other tangible formats for its East Asian collections. This position is a 12 month term appointment.
The East Asian Collections Cataloger will be responsible for providing intellectual access primarily to Chinese-language materials in a variety of tangible formats. Working with both older and more receipt imprints, s/he will search appropriate bibliographic databases (e.g., WorldCat, Brown’s local Josiah catalog), find and modify matching records, or create new entries where necessary.
Reporting to the head of Cataloging and Metadata Services, the East Asian Collections Cataloger will also work closely with the East Asian Collection curator and other staff members to prioritize work, manage workflows, and resolve problems relating to the cataloging of these items.
The Brown University Library encompasses six facilities, including one 24/5 student study space and one off-site, high-density storage building. The Library’s holdings include over 4.6 million total volumes, 13,000 linear feet of manuscript materials, over 88,000 print and electronic journal subscriptions, several hundred thousand e-books, and nearly ca. 80,000 digital objects. The Library’s Asia Collection comprises ca. 150,000 volumes in East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), as well as thousands of additional Western-language items, e-resources, microforms, A/V resources, and maps. A dedicated staff of 155 FTE (including 66 bargaining unit support staff) provide services to a campus population of 800 faculty, 2,500 graduate and medical students, and 6,000 undergraduate students.
The person filling this new position will:
  • Describe Library materials (primarily in the Chinese language) that require original cataloging or substantial upgrading of cataloging copy, using current cataloging codes and carrier standards (e.g., RDA, AACR2, Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC)).
  • Assign classification numbers, subject headings, and genre terms for items in all subject areas.
  • Perform authority work for local, national and international files, including headings contributed to the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO).
  • Effectively manage the flow of materials according to Library priorities
Qualifications:
  • MLS degree from ALA-accredited library school or combination of other graduate degree and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of three years of cataloging experience.
  • Native or near-native Chinese-language ability, including ability to read both traditional and simplified characters.Reading knowledge of Japanese and/or Korean highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with prevailing cataloging rules and standards (e.g., RDA, AACR2), Library of Congress's application and interpretation of those rules, Library of Congress subject headings and classification system, and MARC21 or other data carrier formats. Commitment to contributing to international bibliographic databases and authority files.Experience describing multiple formats
  • Familiarity with Romanization schemes for Chinese (e.g., Pinyin, Wade-Giles).
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with personal computer hardware and software and local and network-based input, editing, and mapping tools.

The Japanese Studies Librarian is a tenure-stream faculty position reporting to the Director of Arts & Humanities in the University Libraries.  Duties include general and specialized reference in the social sciences and humanities; virtual reference and instruction services; classroom teaching as part of an active library instruction program; selecting library materials in the areas of East Asian Languages, primarily Japanese and Korean; and working collaboratively with the Chinese Studies Librarian to guide collection management decisions in the vernacular of East Asian languages collections. The University of Colorado Boulder holds the largest research collection of Asian language materials in the Rocky Mountain region.

The Arts & Humanities Department provides virtual and in-depth personal reference and instructional services to the students and faculty of the University of Colorado Boulder and specializes in services and collections for the arts and humanities. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado Boulder.

Requirements:
·         Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution by the time of appointment.
·         Superior Japanese language skills as well as excellent spoken and written English.
·         Familiarity with an academic or research library working environment, which could include reference and instruction, collection development, virtual reference and learning management software, or Asian-language cataloging.
·         Academic background in the field of Asian studies.

Appointment and Salary:
