Position Description
The Chinese Technical Services Librarian provides original and complex copy cataloging for Chinese script materials in all formats and supervises support staff involved in all aspects of technical processing (serial and monographic acquisitions and cataloging) for the Chinese Collection.  The Librarian also provides statistical reports and other management information on Chinese technical services, provides testing and analysis related to Chinese scripts in library-wide systems, and participates in Yale library policy making on cataloging issues.

Representative Responsibilities
The Librarian I is the beginning rank and is expected to demonstrate excellence in meeting the position responsibilities, as defined by the job description and annual goals. Departmental Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, East Asia Library, the Chinese Technical Services Librarian manages the Chinese Collection acquisitions and cataloging workflow, backlog and special projects, and coordinates various operations such as acquisitions ordering, payment and receipt; cataloging, authority control and catalog maintenance; serials check-in, renewals, and cancellations with Chinese bibliographer. The Librarian works closely with the Librarian for the Chinese Collection to set priorities and ensure that user needs are met.  He/she is responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of Chinese language materials, management of cataloging projects, and the hiring, training, and supervision of two bibliographic assistants, and students, casual, or temporary staff, as required.  The Librarian keeps abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and trends and applies new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.  He/she follows Library of Congress standards and local practice for subject analysis and classification, and NACO standards for authority records. The Librarian contributes to goal-setting and strategic planning in the East Asia Library and the Department and to decision-making on Yale University Library cataloging policy and procedures.  He/she seeks opportunities to contribute to the Yale University Library through participation in committees, task forces, working groups, and projects.  The Librarian is active professionally in organizations such as the American Library Association (ALA), the Council on East Asian Libraries, and other relevant venues.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program. Appointment to Librarian I rank is limited to two years, at which time it is expected that the individual will meet the requirements for performance at the Librarian II level. Appointment at the Librarian II requires a minimum of two years of professional cataloging experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Appointment at the Librarian III requires a minimum of five years of professional cataloging experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.
  • Excellent knowledge of MARC, AACR2, LCRI, LCSH, LCC, and PCC standards, and good understanding of authority control. Familiarity with current trends and best practices in cataloging and metadata services.
  • Experience with bibliographic services such as OCLC and network-based cataloging tools.
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience with personal computer hardware and software as needed to perform library functions.
  • Excellent communication skills (reading, writing, speaking) in Chinese and understanding of the ALA-LC Romanization scheme for Chinese (pinyin).
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Ability to set priorities and adhere to deadlines in a fast-paced work environment

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
·         Familiarity with both simplified and traditional Chinese scripts.
·         Familiarity with RDA and Library of Congress Policy Statements (LCPS).
·         Experience in Chinese acquisitions processes.
·         Familiarity with Chinese rare book descriptive cataloging standards and practices.
·         Experience using non-MARC metadata schemas.
·         Familiarity with non-Latin script searching and indexing.
·         Knowledge of Chinese studies scholarship trends.

THE POSITION
The University of Washington Libraries seeks an innovative and collaborative Technical Services Coordinator for its East Asia Library. The position reports to the Director of the East Asia Library and manages the East Asia Library’s technical services which includes the acquisition of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) materials; cataloging of and metadata for all formats of library materials; CJK serials maintenance, binding, marking, and preservation operations; implementation of institutional practices and national standards; and directing special technical services projects. The position provides original and difficult copy cataloging in Chinese language materials in all formats. The position represents the East Asia Library in policy discussions and deliberations related to technical services and contributes to the overall management of the East Asia Library. The position works closely with and is also evaluated by the University Libraries' Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Provides oversight for and leadership of technical services in the East Asia Library (EAL).
  • Coordinates EAL operations with the Libraries policies and practices as a whole, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and institutional practice.
  • Oversees and coordinates EAL cataloging services, retrospective conversion, and technical services projects.
  • Oversees and coordinates EAL serial services, including cataloging, check in, claiming, relocation, binding, preservation, weeding, record keeping and statistical compilation.
  • Supervises the serials support staff and student assistants to maintain online and manual serials records.
  • Oversees marking operations.
  • Catalogs, classifies, and provides subject analysis for Chinese language materials in all formats.
  • Contributes to overall management of the EAL.
  • Acts as liaison to the Libraries technical services divisions: Acquisitions and Rapid Cataloging Services; Cataloging and Metadata Services; and Preservation Services.
  • Coordinates the work of EAL staff with changes and new developments in technical services policies and practices.
  • Participates in library committees and meetings as appropriate, including the Cataloging Policy Committee; responsible for informing EAL staff of committee discussions and deliberations, implementing decisions, and addressing implications for EAL practice and workflow.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
  • Minimum of two years post-MLS (or equivalent degree) professional experience working in a library or library-related position.
  • Excellent communication skills (to read, write, and converse) in English and Chinese.
  • Experience with cataloging and familiarity with cataloging rules and tools such as OCLC, MARC21 formats, AACR2, LC subject headings and classifications.
  • Ability to work independently and with others in a demanding and rapidly changing environment where consultation, collaboration, and creativity are essential.
Preferred:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging technology as it contributes to technical services.
  • Supervisory and management experience.
  • Evidence of contributions to the profession.
  • Evidence of initiative and resourcefulness in past activities, especially project management.

SALARY:        $48,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

BENEFITS:     Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.

THE POSITION
The University of Washington Libraries seeks an energetic Chinese Studies Librarian committed to providing a range of excellent services and collections.  Reporting to the Director of the East Asia Library, the Chinese Studies Librarian works with one of the premier Chinese Studies programs in the United States. The Program has come to expect that this librarian will have a high degree of accessibility and visibility, actively communicating with students and faculty, and collaborating on projects and curriculum initiatives. The Chinese Studies Librarian typically attends faculty meetings and other departmental events, and is available for activities involving domestic and international collaborations. The Libraries enjoys a strong relationship with the Chinese community, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to sustaining this connection. The Chinese Studies Librarian seeks grants and gifts as appropriate and participates in donor functions. The position also provides original cataloging of Chinese language materials. He/she is a strong team player and collaborates and interacts regularly with the other librarians and staff members within and outside the East Asia Library.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Provides a full range of instructional services, both in class and through online learning and courseware.
  • Provides general and customized reference services and research consultation both on-site and virtual to students and faculty of Chinese studies and other users.
  • Serves as liaison to Chinese studies programs; actively engages with faculty, staff, and students to develop strong working relations; promotes and markets services and resources.
  • Creates and maintains web pages and subject guides and provides computer support for instructions and research in Chinese studies.
  • Working with Director of the East Asia Library, selects materials for Chinese studies, manages acquisitions budget, and assesses user needs to ensure collections are relevant and of high quality.
  • Recommends short and long term goals and objectives for the Chinese studies collection; periodically evaluates the content and condition of the collection; and provides general maintenance of the collection.
  • Performs original cataloging for Chinese language materials.
  • Meets with donors and fosters productive donor relations.
  • Seeks grants and gifts to enhance Chinese studies collections and services.
  • Serves as a member of the East Asia Library management team and, as such, may lead an aspect of the library's public services.
  • Participates in the Libraries' digital initiatives, scholarly communication, and assessment efforts.
  • Represents the Libraries in various professional associations and collaborative programs related to Chinese collections and services.
  • Participates in Libraries-wide task forces, committees, and groups as appropriate.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.

  • Experience or demonstrated strong interest in developing and providing user services.
Preferred:
  • Minimum of two years post-MLS (or equivalent degree) professional experience working in a library or library-related position.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in a field of Chinese Studies, demonstrating broad knowledge across disciplines and with an emphasis on social sciences and humanities.
  • Experience in developing collections and providing instruction.
  • Public service experience in an academic library.
  • Experience with cataloging and familiarity with cataloging rules and tools such as OCLC, MARC21 formats, AACR2, LC subject headings and classifications.
  • Demonstrated experience working creatively, collaboratively, and effectively with colleagues, faculty and students.
  • Evidence of contributions to the profession.

SALARY:        $42,600 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.
