Position Overview
The post of Manager of the Menzies Precinct is one of five positions responsible for managing the provision of library services within Division of Information under the strategic leadership of the Director of Scholarly Information Services and University Librarian, and the relevant Associate Directors and Divisional Managers. These services currently include Library User Services, Scholarly Information Resource Management, and Information Literacy.

Applicants for the position should be able to demonstrate an extensive knowledge of libraries in a university environment and their systems and services, and possess an understanding of and sensitivity to the nature and scope of scholarly information resources relating to Asia and the Pacific. They should also be able to demonstrate experience in the management and delivery of services in one or more of the following areas: library user services, scholarly information resource management, and information literacy.

Role statement
PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Within the Menzies Precinct of the University Library, the Precinct Manager is responsible for providing user focused services associated with Library User Services, Scholarly Information Resource Management, and Information Literacy under the strategic leadership of the Director, Scholarly Information Services and University Librarian.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:
The key accountability areas include Library User Services, Scholarly Information Resource Management, and Information Literacy.

Position Dimension & Relationships:
Reporting to the Director, Scholarly Information Services and University Librarian, the position works under the broad direction of the Associate Director, Planning and Resource Management and the Manager, Library User Services and in close cooperation with similar positions within Scholarly Information Services and the Division of Information, and the wider University community.

Role Statement:
1. Manage the delivery of services within the precinct:
1.1 ensuring optimal availability of services
1.2 maintaining scholarly information resource access and collections, including administration and monitoring
1.3 providing information literacy training
1.4 monitoring facilities and equipment maintenance and upgrades
1.5 participating in the planning, research, development and improvement of existing and new scholarly information resource access arrangements and services and agreed projects, as approved by the Directors of the Division.
2. Supervise the day-to-day activities of the precinct staff engaged in acquiring and organising access to scholarly information resources, developing and delivering information literacy training, and providing information services, and provide guidance and assistance to staff with problem diagnosis and resolution.
3. Provide information support for services including developing and maintaining documentation in relation to scholarly information resources, user guides, training materials and procedures.
4. Cooperate with other staff in Scholarly Information Services and the Division of Information and the wider University community, as required, to plan and deliver coordinated services, collections and information access.
5. Liaise with external suppliers and publishers of scholarly information resources where necessary in support of access to scholarly information resources, collection development and service delivery.
6. Maintain and develop technical knowledge and management skills.
Selection criteria


1. Extensive management experience and proven knowledge of library systems and their technologies in one or more service areas identified in the role statement. Relevant postgraduate qualifications will be highly regarded.

2. Experience and skills relevant to Library user services, Scholarly information resource management or Information literacy.

3. An understanding of and sensitivity to the nature and scope of scholarly information resources centred in the precinct.

4. Experience in the supervision of staff and the ability to provide leadership.

5. Well developed communications skills, both written and oral, including technical writing and delivery of presentations to groups.

6. A commitment to the professional attributes of listening, completing and learning.

Chinese Studies Librarian, University of Chicago

The University of Chicago Library invites applicants for the position of Chinese Studies Librarian. The East Asian Collection supports teaching and research needs of the faculty and students at the University of Chicago. It holds a collection of nearly 800,000 volumes in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages of various formats. It also has a growing collection of electronic resources. The Chinese collection of over 450,000 volumes is particularly strong in classics, philosophy, history, literature, archaeology, philology and art history. As one of the finest such collections in the country, it serves not only the faculty and students of the University but also scholars throughout the country.  The East Asian Collection is housed in the Joseph Regenstein Library.
Under the direction of the Curator of the East Collection, this position is responsible for the following:
Select materials in all formats including electronic resources both in the Chinese language and those on Chinese studies in Western languages, develop a long-term acquisitions policy to support teaching and reserch needs, manage the acquisitions budget allocated, and serve as a liaison to Chinese studies faculty and students.
Provide reference services and bibliographical instruction for faculty and students regarding the Library’s services and its resources, the bibliographic methods, and research strategies.  Responsible for managing, coordinating computer support, and providing services to Chinese studies e-resources. Develop and maintain electronic finding aids and subject guides on Chinese studies for the EA Collection’s web page.  Participate in the development of digital/multimedia resources and services in the Library and on campus. 
Under the direction of the Head of East Asia Technical Services, perform original cataloging for Chinese materials in all formats. Participate in formulating cataloging policy, priorities, and work procedures.  Participate in the activities of the library and scholarly organizations at the local, regional, national, and international level.  
QUALIFICATIONS: Education: A graduate library degree from an ALA-accredited library school with graduate work in Chinese studies or closely-related subject field, or a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies, is required.  Experience: Significant related experience in an academic research library is required.  Experience or demonstrated knowledge of scholarly resources for Chinese studies, reference tools, electronic resources, and trends in publishing industry and book trade in China and Taiwan is also required. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of OCLC, AACR2, LC subject headings and classifications, MARC21 formats and authority files is highly preferred. Awareness of RDA and other metadata standards is desirable. Skills: Candidates must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with faculty, students and staff and possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.  A high degree of computer literacy and a demonstrated interest in the application of information technologies are required.  Languages:  Fluency in English and Chinese languages is required including reading knowledge of classical Chinese.

The University of Chicago Library seeks candidates for the position of Korean Studies Librarian. The East Asian Collection supports teaching and research needs of the faculty and students at the University of Chicago. The Korean collection is an important and integral part of the Collection. The East Asian Collection is housed in the Joseph Regenstein Library. This position reports to the Curator for East Asian Collection.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as liaison with Korean studies faculty and students; evaluate and select materials on Korea in all formats and languages to support the teaching and research needs of Chicago’s faculty and students; manage the acquisitions budget; provide reference services, bibliographical instruction, and database services for the Korean collection; develop and maintain electronic finding aids and subject guides on Korean studies for the EA Collection’s web page; represent the collection at professional meetings including cooperative programs and/or projects; work closely with the Head of the technical services, perform original cataloging for Korean materials and assist in the overall coordination of technical processing for Korean materials. The incumbent reports to the Curator of the East Asian Collection. This position participates in and contributes to local, regional and national professional organizations. Attends conferences and classes to maintain knowledge of changing technologies and developments in collection development, reference, and technical services.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Graduate degree from an ALA accredited MLS or MLIS is required. An undergraduate or graduate degree in Korean Studies or in a social science or humanities discipline with a principal emphasis on Korea is highly desirable as is an excellent knowledge of Korean culture. Experience: Substantial experience in a research library directly related to the field of Korean studies is highly desirable as is knowledge of Korean publishing industry and the book trade. Evidence of special bibliographic and reference work is desirable. Experience or good knowledge of OCLC, AACR2, LCSH and LC classification system, and MARC21 format is required. Awareness of RDA and other metadata standards is desirable. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a changing and diverse environment is essential. Skills: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students and staff; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills and a high degree of computer literacy are all required. Knowledge of electronic resources and information technology applications in Korean studies is desirable. Evidence of a commitment to ongoing professional development is required. Languages: Fluency in English and Korean languages including the ability to process Korean materials written in Hanmun (classical Chinese) is required.

East Asian Studies Librarian at University of Notre Dame

The East Asian Studies Subject Librarian will have responsibility for building basic reference collections in the area as well as crafting special collections in nontraditional areas of East Asian Studies that are focused on local faculty and student interests. Asian Language Cataloger, Ingalls Library

The Ingalls Library at the Cleveland Museum of Art seeks an Asian Language Cataloger. This individual will be responsible for original and copy cataloging of book and non-book materials in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages in the field of art utilizing national cataloging standards, LCCN, LCSH, CJK characters and standards and transliteration standards. The Cataloger will also perform associated name and series authority work for ArtNACO funnel projects, resolve complex cataloging and authority problems, translate Asian language information for museum staff and act as an interpreter for visitors as needed.

The Ingalls Library is a nationally recognized art reference library (including image library and museum archives). Founded in 1916, the library contains approximately 450,000 volumes, including journals, 92,000 auction catalogues, and 24,000 clipping files. The image library contains approximately 285,000 digital images, and 6,000,000 photographs of works of art and architecture, including individual photographs and microfiche.

Qualified candidates will possess an ALA accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science (required) and a Bachelor’s degree in art history (desired) coupled with at least two years of related experience; comprehensive knowledge of current cataloging practices required, including working knowledge of AACR2 rev. ed. cataloging rules, knowledge of RDA, LC classification, LCSH subject headings, and MARC21 format; familiarity with an integrated library system and OCLC required; fluency in English and Chinese required; reading knowledge of Japanese and/or Korean desired; knowledge of common digital metadata standards desired.

Position Overview: Reporting directly to the Head of the Technical Services Department, the Metadata and Media Cataloging Librarian implements metadata standards for various projects and catalogs library resources in various formats, including media. This position is also responsible for cataloging all Manga resources for the Eaton Science Fiction Collection and maps cataloging, especially those in Japanese and Korean.
Responsibilities:
  • Performs original and copy cataloging of monographs and serials in Japanese. Performs original and copy cataloging of Anime and Manga for the Eaton Collection.
  • Writes and maintains documentation of policies and procedures relating to the cataloging and processing of Anime and Manga resources.
  • Works with the Special Collections staff to provide quality and timely access to the Eaton Collection media resources.
  • Helps to develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for metadata schema for the Cataloging Unit.
  • Describes/Catalogs digitized resources and other formats as appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge of and provides guidance to the use of various established and evolving metadata schema.
  • Performs original and copy cataloging of video recordings and other media.

  • Works with the Multimedia Library staff to provide quality and timely access to media resources.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in cataloging  media, books, serials, and maps;
  • Experience with a bibliographic utility (preferably OCLC) and Innovative Interfaces or similar integrated library system;
  • Knowledge of AACR2, national standards and practices;
  • Experience with the application of metadata schemes to organize and provide access to digital collections;
  • Commitment to enhancing services through teamwork and responsiveness to clients;
  • Good oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate clearly and in a timely and effective manner;

Overview of the position:
The University of British Columbia is a recipient of a grant from the Community Historical Recognition Program.  The focus of the project is to create a web-based portal and archive on Chinese-Canadian history which will encompass digital assets created by UBC and other CHRP recipients. 

We are seeking a professional librarian/archivist to be responsible primarily for coordinating digitization activities related to the project at UBC, and for supporting the digitization activities of community partners at other organizations. The incumbent undertakes collection analysis and creates metadata for UBC Library resources chosen for inclusion in the project. The position assists in project coordination and design of various schemas, guides, and digital resources as appropriate. Furthermore, the Chinese-Canadian History librarian/archivist supervises students and library assistants and works closely with other project staff.
This position reports directly to Eleanor Yuen, head of the Asian Library and will also take directions from Dr. Henry Yu, Associate Professor, Department of History who is the grant recipient.

Required qualifications:
A graduate degree in Library or Archival Studies (MAS/MLIS) or equivalent is required from an accredited institution.
Experience working with digital collections.
Demonstrated ability in developing metadata for archival and non-traditional materials.
Experience with computer technology and software, particularly library and archival management systems and digitization technology is essential.
Experience working with archival and/or non-traditional collections, such as oral histories, audio-visual collections, born-digital collections etc.
Experience with managing projects and/or workflows in an archival or library setting.
Knowledge of digital preservation initiatives, standards and best practices.
Ability to manage a diverse set of responsibilities and tasks.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Experience in developing partnerships with evidence of successful collaborations.
Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills in both English and Chinese language environment
Ability to read and write traditional Chinese, and speak Cantonese.

Preferred qualifications:
Knowledge of various metadata standards such as Dublin Core, Rules for Archival Description and AACR/RDA.
Knowledge and understanding of archival theory.
Knowledge of intellectual property, privacy and copyright issues.
Knowledge of Chinese-Canadian history and the Community Historical Recognition Program.


Terms of Appointment and Salary:
This new position will be filled as a full-time 20 month term from the date of hire.
