DESCRIPTION
The East Asia Serials Specialist maintains the UC San Diego Library Serial standing order and subscription records for all formats, both physical and electronic. This position is independently responsible and is the primary resource for the management of the Chinese, Japanese and Korean serial records. Approves payment for invoices, claims serial issues, processes serial and, bindery receipts and maintains serial holdings records.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Reading knowledge of Chinese and/or Japanese language(s) sufficient to identify bibliographic elements of serials, including but not limited to; title, date, issue, frequency and billing information and to interpret basic correspondence.
  • Ability to transliterate Chinese, Japanese and Korean scripts into Romanized characters for acquisitions processing.
  • Library experience with knowledge of library terminology, bibliographic element, and publishing patterns of serial and monographic publication rules relevant to serials acquisitions.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written, ability to communicate courteously, effectively and persuasively while dealing with a variety of people.
  • Ability to seek out discrepancies and resolve problems independently.

Washington University in St. Louis: East Asian Librarian

POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the overall planning and operation of the East Asian Library to provide effective library services to faculty and students in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and East Asian Studies Program.  Responsible for collection development in all East Asian languages and materials, as well as for overseeing cataloging of all vernacular materials in these subject areas.  Responsible for outreach, reference, instruction, and collection development and management for Chinese studies.  Supervises the Japanese Studies Librarian and staff of the East Asian Library.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify information needs of faculty and students in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and East Asian Studies Program; plan, implement, and evaluate library services and programs to meet those needs; and develop and maintain effective working relationships with library users, library staff, and University community.  Provide specialized reference services, including programs for user education and training.  Create and maintain access to appropriate electronic sources including initiatives in the Digital Humanities as appropriate. Oversees collection development efforts in all areas.  Coordinate services with and direct supervision of the Japanese Studies librarian and other staff of the East Asian Library. 
  • Act as bibliographer in Chinese studies and be responsible for collection development and liaison work in that area; perform original and adaptive cataloging and/or review outsourced cataloging of Chinese language materials for the libraries.  Manage vendor relations and work closely with Acquisitions and others in invoicing and payment of vernacular materials including managing electronic resources. 
  • Recruit all staff, recommend their appointment; supervise and provide for continued training, and carry out the Libraries' approved performance appraisal program for all staff. Plan for student staffing and prepare budget requests. 
  • Responsible for managing facilities maintenance, including safety and security for users, staff and collections in the East Asian Library. 
  • Maintain professional currency and participate in professional development activities as they relate to East Asian Studies librarianship and technology. Participate in library-wide programs, serving on committees or task forces as appropriate.


Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited school or equivalent 
  • Fluent command of both written and spoken Chinese and English. 
  • Subject knowledge of East Asian cultures and issues 
  • Two years professional experience in acquisitions or as a bibliographer/subject specialist 
  • Knowledge of databases, serials and monographic acquisitions issues and practices 
  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills including the ability to coach a team 
  • Strong service attitude with excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

Salary Range
The hiring range for this position is $58,441 - $76,011 annually.

Major Responsibilities:
Princeton University Library seeks candidates for the position of Leader, East Asian Languages Team (EALT).   Applicants must be strongly versed in Chinese and the history and cultures of East Asia, and possess the qualities and experience necessary to lead a team of professional experts and highly skilled support staff in the creation and management of metadata critical to the effective use of the Library’s renowned East Asian Collections throughout the library system.

Princeton University Library collects materials in all subjects in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, with an emphasis on literature, history, and art, ranging from rare books to a wide variety of digital databases.  The Japanese collection has similar areas of strength with the holdings in premodern history being particularly noteworthy.  The Korean collection, though much smaller in scale than the other two, provides a basis for scholarly research.

The position reports to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services and is part of the management group responsible for framing the Department's overall metadata strategy, exploring new technologies, and implementing new workflows to improve user services and enhance discovery access to the Library’s collections.  The East Asian Languages Team Leader directly supervises 2 professional librarians, and 8 paraprofessional bibliographic specialists.  The EALT Leader collaborates with colleagues within Technical Services and in other Library departments on projects providing metadata to support digital initiatives, contributing special technical and subject expertise to discovery system configuration efforts, and crafting innovative cataloging strategies to address special acquisition and holdings scenarios.  The EALT Leader supplements the Team’s cataloging production to ensure priority throughput and attends to cataloging instances requiring creative solutions.  The East Asian Languages Team Leader is expected to maintain awareness of peer operations and best practices through professional involvement.

Essential qualifications:

  • MLS combined with an academic background in East Asian studies; or an advanced degree in East Asian studies with an emphasis on Chinese language, literature, culture, and history;
  • Fluency in English and Chinese languages (in both traditional and simplified characters) with excellent oral written communication skills, including excellent knowledge of the pinyin Romanization system and computer input methods; 
  • Supervisory experience or related experience demonstrating an ability to manage personnel;
  • Cataloging experience in an academic library.


Strongly preferred qualifications:

  • Reading knowledge of Japanese or Korean languages, including their library Romanization systems;
  • Experience providing cataloging and metadata for digital formats, and in creating and editing non-MARC metadata using standards and schema such as Dublin Core, MODS, etc.;
  • Familiarity with linked data concepts and standards;
  • Experience with workflow planning.

Position Description
Reporting to the East Asian Librarian, the Assistant to the East Asian Librarian is responsible for the overall management of ordering, processing and receiving of monograph, serials and electronic resource in the Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. The assistant works closely with vendors in East Asia to monitor ordering, approval plans, and Chinese shelf-ready services shipping schedules to meet annual budget spending plan. The Assistant processes invoices and monitors fund expenditure in accordance with library’s fiscal deadlines. The Assistant manages East Asian Resources (EAR) serials, including serial exchanges and gifts. The Assistant also assists with acquisitions of English materials on East Asia.

The Assistant provides assistance to library patrons for their information needs, maintains/monitors EAR website, online subject guides and social media activities. The individual assists the librarian with outreach activities including library event planning. The Assistant serves as EAR’s office manager, compiles all types of statistics and drafts reports when requested. In consultation with the librarian, the Assistant creates and maintains up-to-date office files.

The Assistant hires, trains and manages student assistants. The Assistant assesses unit workflows, and actively engages with the supervisor to creatively reorganize EAR’s workflow for efficiency when appropriate.

Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
The successful candidate must have:
  • Language skills: advanced Chinese language proficiency (reading, writing and the ability to pronounce standard Mandarin Chinese). Good command of English in reading, writing and speaking.
  • Knowledge/understanding of East Asian cultures
  • Effective Microsoft office suite skills, internet and social media skills and experiences.
  • Good attention to detail and the ability to effectively organize multiple tasks, set priorities and work independently.

Ohio State University: East Asian Studies Assistant

The Libraries' East Asian Studies unit furthers academic research about and engagement with East Asia throughout the university, with a focus on supporting academic success in the University's East Asian Studies Center, Institute for Chinese Studies, Institute for Japanese Studies, Institute for Korean Studies and Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL) by building a strong, distinctive, interdisciplinary and responsive collection and engaging scholars in teaching, learning and research. This position assists in the selection, management and use of distinctive collections by coordinating and implementing activities such as acquisitions, cataloging, searching, reference, outreach and access support at high levels of complexity and responsibility.

Assists faculty, students and others by providing orientation, instruction on methods and identification of materials related to the use of EAS collections, particularly Korean Studies resources; answers reference questions and assist library patrons in researching and locating information by phone, email, chat, walk-in or other manner of correspondence; provides supportive research services, including compiling specialized indexes, preparing bibliographies, developing online tutorials and other research and instruction tools; reviews and provides updates on related academic program curricula to identify opportunities for engagement and outreach; manages the EAS, related subject and event web pages to support patron discovery of collections (especially new acquisitions) and services; coordinates selection activity; assists with preparation of orders and notifies appropriate librarians and Technical Services staff of problems to resolve difficulties with foreign vendors; works with Technical Services to facilitate processes such as gift and exchange processing, materials check-in, binding, and catalog records enhancement; manages the EAS reference collection; prepares statistical reports on acquisition and use of materials, as well as service impact; interviews, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates students; maintains written instructions for all EAS procedures; assumes responsibility for collection and services in the absence of the Librarians. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in appropriate area or an equivalent combination of education and experience required; knowledge of East Asia is required; proficiency with computers and standard office programs; fluency (reading, writing and speaking) in English and demonstrated proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean.

Desired Qualifications: Strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills; ability to work independently and as a team member; academic library experience; supervisory experience. Preference given to candidates with proficiency in more than one of the desired language skills.

University of Virginia: East Asian Collections Librarian

University of Chicago: Head of East Asian Technical Services

The University of Chicago Library seeks an innovative and experienced librarian for the position of Head, East Asian Technical Services.

Reporting to the Curator for the East Asian Collection, the Head of East Asian Technical Services is responsible for managing the technical services operations for all materials in the East Asian Collection. The technical services operations include acquisitions, receiving, cataloging, binding, and labeling activities that support bibliographic access and control of the collections. The Head supervises supporting staff members for technical services, coordinates the work and activities of the technical services staff members, and sustains communication with other departments of the Library, including the central Technical Services Department, Preservation Department, systems colleagues, and stacks management operations. The Head also leads and manages the unit's cataloging outsourcing project, and performs original cataloging for Chinese materials, especially for non-monographic materials.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
In collaboration with the Curator and the central Technical Services Department of the Library, establish and update technical services policies, workflows, and procedures for East Asian (EA) that reflect changes and ensure efficiency and productivity. Supervise supporting staff and students; hire and train new employees, coordinating training with the central Technical Services Department as appropriate; provide performance appraisals for supervised staff. Motivate and manage staff to achieve unit goals and meet evolving requirements and standards for acquisitions, cataloging, and physical processing. Ensure that the work of the unit is responsive to user needs, and is in line with the Library's expectations for quantity and quality of the work. Oversee cataloging performed by Chinese, Japanese and Korean librarians. Maintain awareness of and leadership in advancing new developments in bibliographic control, metadata standards, emerging library linked data applications, innovative techniques and tools, as well as best practices for technical services. Serve as the resource person for the EA Collection on issues related to technical services, especially cataloging, including OCLC, our local Kuali-OLE system, national standards, and local policies and practices. Assume the role of problem solver for daily technical service operations; discuss the issues, problems encountered and possible solutions with the EA staff members involved, the Curator, and/or the central Technical Services Department, if necessary, to come up with solutions that are communicated clearly and understood by the staff involved. Manage the
cataloging outsourcing project to ensure its smooth implementation; serve as contact person to coordinate quality control, record loading, and communication with the service provider. Initiate and manage special projects of East Asian Technical Services. Perform some original cataloging for Chinese materials, especially non-monographic materials and electronic resources. Collect and compile statistics and submit an annual report of the technical services operations to the Curator. Serve on library committees, and be active professionally, both locally and nationally. Represent the East Asian Collection within the Library on technical services issues and bring the EA perspective to the Library's discussions as appropriate. Represent Chicago's East Asian Collection in local, regional and national forums such as CEAL on technical services issues, policies and practices.

Required Qualifications: Graduate library degree from an ALA-accredited library school or foreign equivalent plus substantial relevant experience; substantial cataloging experience in an academic/research library; supervisory experience; substantial experience with and excellent knowledge of cataloging standards, tools and resources pertaining to East Asian cataloging such as RDA, AACR2, LC subject headings and classification, MARC21 formats and authority files; fluency in English and Chinese languages with excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to construct clear documentation; demonstrated ability to take initiatives, to prioritize work, to coordinate workflow, and to lead a team and/or project; strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills; strong critical thinking and problem solving skills; enthusiasm for and ability to work in a team environment with diverse staff; excellent knowledge of Pinyin Romanization system for Chinese language.

Preferred Qualifications: substantial cataloging experience with materials in East Asian Languages; experience in managing related operations in an academic/research library, particularly with East Asian materials; experience designing and deploying training programs for staff; experience with LC-PCC Policy Statements, BIBCO, NACO and CONSER; cataloging experience with non-book materials and electronic resources; knowledge of another East Asian language; familiarity with the Romanization system for Japanese or Korean language; demonstrated strong computer skills; professionally active at the regional and/or national levels.

Oberlin College: East Asian Studies Librarian

Job Summary
The Oberlin College Library invites applications for the position of East Asian Studies Librarian. This is a full-time, 12-month Administrative and Professional staff position reporting to the Collection Development Librarian.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Collection Development Librarian, the incumbent is responsible for: 1) selection, acquisition, and bibliographic control of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language collections; 2) liaison and instruction activities with faculty and students in East Asian Studies; 3) active involvement as part of the Library’s web development and digital initiatives teams.

Essential Job Functions
• Serve as the primary liaison between the Library and the East Asian Studies Program; consult with East Asian Studies faculty and lead collection development processes for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language materials in all formats acquired by the library; work with library Collection Development, Cataloging and Metadata Services, and Continuing Resources departmental staff to select, acquire and process Chinese, Japanese, and Korean materials.
• Provide research assistance and consultation to East Asian Studies faculty and students as needed, including information literacy instruction for East Asian Studies related courses.
• Provide complete original cataloging as well as [complex] copy-cataloging for CJK materials in all formats and subjects following national standards as well as local policies. Resolve database problems in wide range of relevant areas, including classification schedules, subject analysis, cataloging rule interpretations, and authority work.
• Train and supervise student assistants needed to support East Asian studies collection development and processing, including writing and maintaining documentation.
• Participate in the library’s web development and digital initiatives teams, assuming major responsibility in selected areas and assisting in others. Areas of need include: 1) design and development of the interfaces for the Library web site, OPAC, discovery tools, and institutional repository; 2) maintenance and support for locally produced databases, digital collections and exhibitions on a variety of proprietary and open source platforms.
• Work in collaboration with library and archives staff, students, and faculty engaged in digital scholarship projects.

Required Qualifications
MLS from an ALA-accredited institution. Written and spoken fluency in Chinese and/or Japanese. Familiarity of Romanization rules, such as Pinyin, Wade-Giles, and/or Hepburn. Knowledge of bibliographic databases, metadata standards, and reference tools, including AACR2, RDA, LCRI, LC-PCC PSs, LCSH, LC Classification Schedules, PCC & CONSER cataloging guidelines, and MARC formats. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; demonstrated ability to work well in a team; demonstrated ability to work with web development tools in a library environment.

Desired Qualifications
Written and spoken fluency in Korean. Ordering and/or cataloging experience using OCLC-Connexion and local library systems. Experience with East Asian book and serials trade. The Opportunity
Reporting to the Director - East Asian Library and the Director, Canada-Hong Kong Library, the Public Service Librarian will provide a wide range of professional services to support the academic activities of faculty and students in East Asian studies and Chinese Canadian Studies. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating public services and outreach activities, which includes, but is not limited to participating in EAL & CHKL reference services and patron orientation/information literacy instruction sessions as well as library tours, hiring, training and supervising regular staff and student employees; communicating with faculty to address their access needs; maintaining faculty course reserve materials; handling patrons’ issues related to fines, etc. and creating/maintaining EAL & CHKL online access services & information. Other responsibilities may include assuming responsibility for EAL & CHKL collection development, assisting subject librarians with material acquisition in certain subject areas and regions including e-book acquisitions, monitoring budget spending in an assigned area of collection development and managing the activities related to gift donations and material exchanges.

Required Qualifications:
  • An ALA-accredited Master of Library or Information Science degree or equivalent 
  • In-depth knowledge related to one or more fields of East Asian Studies 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of China studies as an academic discipline, familiarity with East Asian studies

OVERVIEW

Michigan Libraries is seeking a dynamic individual to lead the Asia Library, a diverse, comprehensive, and globally recognized Library with growing collections and a highly talented staff. The Head will have the experience or potential to excel in the following areas of strategic importance:
  1. Defining, pursuing, and communicating a clear vision for the future of the Asia Library in a way that moves the library and campus-wide groups towards a shared purpose.

CONTEXT

The University of Michigan’s Asia Library has a long and distinguished tradition of building and providing access to comprehensive collections relevant to East Asian Studies. The Asia Library holds approximately one million physical volumes of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean monographs, serials, microforms, and other media. The Library also provides access to thousands of electronic databases, books, and serials in East Asian languages. The collection of East Asia materials in western languages is also quite strong. The Head directs the work of the librarians who are responsible for collection development budgets totaling more than $1,000,000 annually.

These collections are particularly strong in the humanities and social sciences and support doctoral level studies. The Asia Library has a strong history of successful partnerships with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the International Institute, the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, the Center for Japanese Studies, and the Nam Center for Korean Studies. The long-standing partnerships are essential for sustaining the entire range of research needs of faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and staff; fostering and innovating scholarly communication; effectively using instructional technologies; embracing new research resources while supporting traditional research methods; and encouraging interdisciplinary research and collaboration across campus and beyond. This collection not only serves the faculty and students of the university but also scholars throughout North America. The Asia library belongs to a number of cooperative programs such as the Council on East Asia Libraries, the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources, and the Korean Collections Consortium of North America. The Asia Library is considered to be among the top five libraries of its kind in the United States.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Positions the Asia Library as a recognized leader in the delivery of scholarly content through an appropriate array of services, programs, and creative applications of technology.
  • Fosters productive and collaborative relationships with directors, chairs, faculty, and administrators in the relevant Centers and programs and within the College of Literature, Sciences and the Arts, as well as across campus.
  • Fosters productive and collaborative relationships with library staff in departments and units within the University of Michigan Library.
  • Serves as the Collection Coordinator for Asia Library by managing acquisitions budgets, gifts, and endowments.
  • Represents the Asia Library and the University Library through professional service and affiliations, including: engagement in scholarly activities; professional affiliations and involvement at national and international levels; developing and maintaining collegial relationships with East Asian librarians and researchers from peer institutions.
  • Initiates and cultivates close relations with donors of funds and materials relating to Asia Library collections; collaborates with teaching faculty, the Director of Library Development and the Associate University Librarian for Collections, as appropriate, on fundraising activities.
  • Teach East Asian studies research methods and resources classes to graduate and undergraduate students; Teach specific course-related sessions requested by faculty; Offer various training sessions and workshops to University community regarding library resources; Provide classroom, in-person, and virtual reference services on topics related to East Asian Studies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree (in East Asian studies or related field of study) and experience.
  • Proficiency (speaking, writing, and reading) in one of the following languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) in support of East Asian scholarly programs.

Position:
The East Asian Library's (EAL) collection contains more than 801,000 bound volumes, 38,000 print and electronic serials subscriptions, rich offerings of digital content, and a world-famous collection of rare books and artifacts. About 69% of EAL's holdings are Chinese, 27% Japanese and 4% Korean. Collections range across all fields of knowledge but focus especially on humanities and social sciences. The EAL is staffed by 4 librarians, 3 support staff, and many student assistants. Another 11.5 FTE of staff are devoted to processing and cataloging East Asian materials. The Director bears primary responsibility for all aspects of administration of the EAL, supervision of staff, providing leadership in planning and implementing collections, liaison and services, and representing the Library in many national and international partnerships with other centers of excellence in East Asian Studies.

The EAL serves students (undergrad and graduate), faculty and visiting researchers associated with the study of East Asia in all disciplines at all levels. In close liaison with the Department and Program of East Asian Studies, and serving the broad East Asian studies constituencies across campus, the Director coordinates the work of Chinese, Japanese and Korean Studies Librarians in developing and managing strong, interdisciplinary digital and print collections, shaping and providing innovative services for all levels of library patrons (via reference, research consultation, instructional programs, exhibits, and production of online guides) in support of learning, teaching and research.

The Director works closely with the Department and Program to ensure the EAL provides outstanding support for their over-arching priorities on classical traditions, history and literature, and the study of the contemporary world of China, Japan and Korea. Liaison with other departments (including Tech Services, Systems, Center for Digital Humanities, and Preservation) forms an important component of the operation of the EAL. The Director's work is coordinated with that of other area studies units in the Library system, under the oversight of the Associate University Librarian for Collection Development.

Columbia University: Project Archivist (Temporary 18-month Appointment)

The Columbia University Libraries seek a Project Archivist to archive film programs, and ephemera from the Makino Mamoru Collection on East Asian Film and to complete an online finding aid for the entire collection. 

Material processing will follow standard practice using the Society of American Archivists’ Arranging and Describing Archives and Manuscripts (2005), Describing Archives: A Content Standard (2004), as well as Columbia’s local practices. The archivist will follow the arrangement of the collection drafted by the previous archivist who worked on the parts processed to date, will conduct relevant research on the programs, evaluate their organization in the arrangement, perform physical processing and preparation for our offsite storage facility by coordinating the transfer of boxes, provide reference services, and perform outreach, including writing blog posts, updating the web page, giving presentations, cooperating on public programs, train and supervise one or two graduate student helper(s), and create a standard MARC record and finding aid using EAD following the RLG Best Practice Guidelines for Encoded Archival Description (2002).

This is a temporary grant-funded 18-month appointment with the possibility of extension with a proposed start date of April 1, 2014. The appointment can be for a 9, 10 or 11-month appointment but the project must be completed by the grant’s end date of December 31, 2016.

Minimum qualifications:
- MLS or MA in Archival Management or equivalent

- Advanced ability to read and write Japanese and strong verbal skills in Japanese

The University of Maryland Libraries are seeking dynamic and innovative applicants for the position of Curator of the Gordon W. Prange Collection and Librarian for East Asian Studies. The successful candidate will create and implement a vision for the Gordon W. Prange Collection, a world-renown special collection of rare and archival materials that constitutes the most comprehensive collection of Japanese language publications issued in Japan during the post-World War II period of 1945-1949. The Prange Collection encompasses over 1.7 million items representing virtually everything published in Japan during this period. The University of Maryland Libraries, in partnership with the National Diet Library of Japan, have engaged in large-scale microfilming and digitization projects to preserve and improve access to this historically significant and unique collection. Project funders have included the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership and the Nippon Foundation. The Curator/Librarian will also be responsible for East Asian studies materials in the Libraries’ general collection, which includes over 80,000 monographs, periodicals and reference works in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. Particular strengths include humanities and social sciences with an emphasis on Chinese and Japanese history and culture in support of the research and curricular needs of faculty and students in East Asian Studies.

The Curator/Librarian will develop a robust program of collection development, research services, digitization, outreach, and scholarly activity to support these collections. In addition, the successful candidate will not only manage these collections and related services, but will also be a scholar with an active program of print and digital research based in the Prange and East Asia Collections.

Required
• Master of Library Science/Information Science degree, or a combination of an advanced degree

NYU Shanghai Library: Director (Search Reopening)

New York University is seeking a Library Director for its newest portal campus, NYU Shanghai.  NYU Shanghai is the first Sino-US higher education joint venture to grant a degree that is accredited in the US as well as in China. A research university with liberal arts and sciences at its core, it resides in one of the world's great cities that is also a vibrant intellectual community. NYU Shanghai will recruit scholars who are committed to our global vision of transformative teaching and innovative research.

New York University has established itself as a Global Network University, a multi-
site, organically connected network encompassing key global cities and idea capitals. The network has three degree-granting campuses - New York, Shanghai, and Abu Dhabi - complemented by 12 additional academic centers across five continents. Faculty and students circulate within the network in pursuit of common research interests and cross-cultural, interdisciplinary endeavors, both local and global.

The Library of NYU Shanghai will deliver and coordinate a wide range of academic services that support the teaching, learning and research of NYU Shanghai’s faculty and students.  Drawing on the resources and infrastructure of the libraries at NYU New York, the NYU Shanghai library provides an opportunity to create a forward-looking 21st century library program and facility to serve a culturally diverse and academically talented population.  NYU Shanghai opened in September 2013 with a freshman class of 300 students, and is expected to grow over eight years to a target undergraduate student population of 2400 along with selected graduate programs.  The NYU Shanghai Library also serves an active NYU Study Abroad program.

In consultation with NYU Libraries and consistent with the NYU library mission and programs, the Director of the NYU Shanghai Library will provide leadership in 1) establishing library services and programs that supports NYU Shanghai’s academic and programmatic mission and 2) implementing and directing ongoing operations of the library.   The position reports jointly to the Dean, Division of Libraries at NYU and the Provost, NYU Shanghai. 

In close coordination with NYU New York, the position will direct the implementation of the library program for NYU Shanghai, including program start-up and expansion, staff recruitment and development, facilities requirements, development of joint services with NYU New York and NYU Abu Dhabi, resource management for the library’s budget, and development of policies for library operations and services.  The Director of the NYU Shanghai Library will work closely with colleagues in the NYU Division of Libraries and at NYU Abu Dhabi to develop services that optimize library staff and resources across the NYU Libraries.  The Director also works closely with the senior staff of NYU Shanghai to plan and implement phased-in on-site services.  The incumbent will be based in Shanghai, with some travel required to NYU New York. 


Principal Duties

•    Responsible for the planning, project management, coordination and implementation of library services and policies at NYU Shanghai in conjunction with NYU New York Division of Libraries counterparts, including collection development, technical services, public services, and facilities, as well as front end library and academic technology support services.  Faculty technology support services, including support for digital scholarship and instructional technology, are provided in collaboration with NYU Shanghai Academic Affairs.
•    Participate in NYU Shanghai campus and program planning and ongoing program development.
•    Recruit, develop and manage an outstanding library staff, and provide direction for the continuing recruitment, selection, orientation, development, training and retention of library staff.
•    Lead the effective and efficient ongoing operation of all aspects of library service on the NYU Shanghai campus consistent with the mission and service philosophy of NYU Shanghai and NYU New York.
•    Develop and manage the NYU Shanghai library budget in collaboration with NYU New York.
•    Oversee the development of print and digital collections, including participation in joint NYU-wide collection development, acquisitions and processing.
•    Develop productive relationships and collaborations with the Shanghai academic and research library community.

Required Qualifications

•    ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent.
•    Minimum 3 years successful administrative experience and at least 5 years managing and/or supervising a department in an academic setting, including budget and personnel management.
•    Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing innovative user services and technologies in the library program.
•    Demonstrated experience in assessment, planning and program development.
•    Knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic library and information services, instructional/information technologies, and scholarly communication.
•    Knowledge of developments in higher education that affect research libraries, scholarly process, and the University’s core mission in teaching, learning and research.
•    Ability to work with others in a team environment and communicate complex issues and perspectives to project team representatives across a global network.
•    Demonstrated excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills.
•    Strong commitment to service excellence.
•    Ability to work in a Chinese business and cultural environment, including basic language skills

Preferred
•    Second masters degree
•    Experience in a research university library
•    Deep knowledge of Chinese culture and the ability to speak its national dialect fluently
•    College or university library start-up, renovation or construction experience
•    Experience working in a culturally diverse environment
•    Prior international experience

Rice University, a private university located in Houston, Texas, is seeking a highly motivated librarian committed to building academic library collections and services tailored to the present and future needs of our community. The successful candidate will work to build library collections for the recently created Chao Center for Asian Studies, including assisting with library services, and working with the staff of the Chao Center and Fondren Library to promote Rice University’s developing program. The successful candidate will contribute to primary resource collections, including digitization projects, in Fondren’s special collections. Position reports to AUL for Collections.

Requirements include: ALA-accredited MLS; minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience in collection development in an academic setting, fluency in English and Chinese languages including reading knowledge of classical Chinese, demonstrated experience and facility with digital content. Preferred: second advanced degree in relevant humanities or social sciences discipline.

Salary/benefits: This position is funded by a grant from the Chao Center; $52,000 minimum; no state or local income tax; 21 benefit days; 8 study days; TIAA/CREF and Fidelity; health and life insurance; tuition waiver.

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Ingalls Library and Museum Archives seeks qualified candidates for its Art Bibliographer – Asian Languages position. The Art Bibliographer— Asian Languages works in conjunction with the Director of Library and Archives to ensure the development of the Ingalls Library collection in accordance with the written Collection Development Policy and through established relationships with vendors world-wide. The position is responsible for the identification and selection of books and other intellectual materials in Asian languages for the museum library. Typical duties include working on matters pertaining to selection of materials and overall collection development including establishing book selection policy and criteria for acquisitions based on knowledge of the literature and needs of current and future researchers; maintains primary responsibility for the library’s acquisition of new materials in Asian languages through established relationships with key vendors; and assists with the receipt and processing of all Asian language gifts, exchanges, and transfer materials in all formats including evaluation of materials for relevance to collection.

A Master’s degree (M.A.) or Ph.D in art history required. Knowledge of art historical literature. Foreign language fluency in either Chinese or Japanese required; reading knowledge of Korean and whichever of Chinese or Japanese where fluency is lacking. Master's degree in Library Science (M.L.S.) from an ALA accredited program preferred. Prior experience working in an academic or research library, preferably in an acquisitions department, and familiarity with integrated library systems and OCLC are desirable. Excellent research, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated organizational, decision-making and problem-solving skills including the ability to create policy; supervise staff, interns, and volunteers; prioritize and manage workflow, projects and multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and solving problems in a dynamic environment. Must have experience developing and managing relationships with vendors, publishers and interface providers. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with institutional departments, community partners and potential donors.
