The Washington University Libraries is seeking a highly collaborative, knowledgeable and user-driven professional to serve as East Asian Librarian and Chinese/Japanese Studies Librarian.  The Washington University Libraries, comprised of 12 libraries on the university’s Danforth, West, and Medical School Campuses, reporting to the Vice Provost and University Librarian (in association with 3 campus partners), operate as a unified library system in support of the research, teaching, and learning mission of the university.  The Libraries’ house more than 3.6 million books, journals, and other print materials; 2.5 million microforms; 50,000 AV titles; and have access to more than 65,000 electronic journals and more than 500,000 e-books.  The libraries' 135 dedicated professional and support staff serve an increasingly diverse community and exemplify the libraries' commitment to meet the needs of faculty, staff and students for the present - and for years to come.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Head of Distributed Libraries, responsible for the overall planning and operation of the East Asian Library to provide effective library services to faculty and students in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and East Asian Studies Program.  Responsible for collection development in all East Asian languages and materials, as well as for overseeing cataloging of all vernacular materials in these subject areas.  Responsible for outreach, reference, instruction, and collection development and management for Chinese studies, Japanese studies, and/or Korean studies depending on area of expertise.  Supervises staff of the East Asian Library including one professional librarian.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited school or equivalent.
Fluent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese or Japanese.
Formal education in East Asian, Chinese, or Japanese Studies or related field.
Two years professional library experience.
Knowledge of databases, serials and monographic acquisitions issues and practices.
Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills including the ability to coach a team.
Strong service attitude with excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to do detail-oriented work, including strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Asian Art Museum: Curatorial Assistant

Under general supervision, provides curatorial assistance and administrative support to the Curator of Chinese Art in programs and projects related to the Chinese Art Department, including research, cataloging, acquisition, conservation, education, exhibition, registration and publication.  The nature of the work requires maximum flexibility, resourcefulness and initiative in addition to excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Assists with the maintenance and documentation of the departmental collection; assists in the classification, description, and interpretation of artworks; conducts research for identifying and interpreting the objects; writes informational labels, assists in preparation of brochures and other related materials as required brochures and other related materials as required; assists in the research and preparation for grants; updates and organizes files.
  • Assists in planning, developing and organizing exhibitions; assists in supervising the preparation and installation of artworks; coordinates administrative details of exhibitions as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Art History or Asian Studies, with a specialization in Chinese Art; Advanced degree preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational, planning, research and presentation skills. Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers and donors.
  • Computer proficiency; knowledge of Microsoft Word.
  • Detail-oriented, meticulous and conscientious in following through on assigned tasks.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Chinese and knowledge of Chinese culture.

COMPENSATION

$22.3979-$26.9004 per hour.

Essential Duties
:

Research / Instruction Support:
• Providing reference services and research consultation in assigned academic programs at the University to support teaching, learning, and research

Required Qualifications:

This an exciting new opportunity to project manage all aspects of the British Library’s major new ‘Literary Icons’ partnership project with organisations across China. As part of this role, you will work with internal and external partners in the UK and in China to plan, implement, monitor, and measure a diverse series of work packages.

You will have excellent project management skills and experience of managing complex international projects, and will also have working knowledge of written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin), as well as excellent written and oral communication skills more broadly. The Chinese Studies community also includes IR/PS affiliated research units such as the 21st Century China Program, Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China, Center on Emerging and Pacific Economies, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, and Global Leadership Institute.

The UC San Diego Library acquires significant amounts of resources in the humanities and social sciences on Greater China, including English- and Chinese-language resources in all formats pertaining to pre-modern, modern and contemporary history, international relations, economics, politics, sociology, popular culture and society, art, visual arts, music, film and literature. The East Asia Collection, established in 1988, focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese, and Japanese and Korean (CJK) language materials in the humanities and social sciences. It is rapidly becoming recognized as a new regional as well as national resource center for researchers and students in the field of East Asia area studies.

Responsibilities of the Position

The position will report to the Director of the Library’s Academic Liaison Program. The incumbent will:

•    Implement liaison services to and actively engage with faculty and students in the Chinese Studies Program, the Chinese History Program, the China regional specialization at the School of IR/PS, as well as academic departments and programs in the humanities and the social sciences that offer courses on China.
•    Develop strategies to learn about and understand information needs of academic departments and programs, and to build partnerships with research and teaching faculty.
•    Serve as the primary contact for research and educational needs in Chinese Studies; and develop and promote services and resources to enhance the research, teaching, and learning mission of UC San Diego.
•    Build and sustain strong and consistent communication channels between the Library, the Chinese Studies programs in both Arts & Humanities and International Relations and Pacific Studies, affiliated programs and research units, and other departments and programs as assigned.
•    Design and deliver curriculum-integrated instruction and other learning activities in a variety of formats for Chinese Studies faculty and students.
•    Develop and promote online subject guides and other information resources for Chinese Studies.
•    Develop and maintain collections in Chinese and English-language resources in all formats, including film, media, and data, in support of the various Chinese Studies academic programs.
•    Serve as the primary Chinese Studies specialist for reference and research assistance.
•    Communicate effectively with colleagues, students and faculty to integrate information, media, and data literacies within Chinese Studies curricular and research programs.
•    Collaborate with librarians and staff in other Library programs regarding acquisitions, vendor selection and relations, approval plans, and cataloging of Chinese-language resources.
•    Collaborate with librarians and staff on collection management related issues including cancellations, consolidations, preservation and conservation of relevant materials.
•    Work with other UC campuses in collaborative collection development efforts, and responsible as California Digital Library’s Resource Liaison for select Chinese electronic resources.
•    Serve as lead UC San Diego representative to the UC East Asian Bibliographers’ Group. As such, evaluate new and ongoing Chinese digital resources, and coordinate consortial acquisitions efforts and serve as a lead in negotiating terms of access and content for select resources.

Minimum Qualifications
•    Professional degree from a library school, or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services.
•    Advanced academic work in Chinese Studies, or demonstrated knowledge of Chinese Studies as an academic discipline.
•    High level of professional competency in written and spoken Chinese (Putonghua/Mandarin) and English.
•    Knowledge of Classical Chinese and the Pinyin and Wade-Giles Romanization systems.
•    Ability to provide advanced research assistance, select and manage resources for the collections, and participate in course-integrated instruction in Chinese Studies.
•    Familiarity with electronic and scholarly resources and reference tools for Chinese Studies.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Elling O. Eide Foundation of Sarasota, Florida seeks an experienced Librarian, Chinese Cataloger/Subject Specialist to be responsible for establishing and developing a collection that focuses on pre-modern China and Central/Inner Asia. The Eide Library consists mainly of modern and thread-bound books in Chinese, some published before 1911; volumes in Western languages, Japanese, and Korean; and about two-hundred periodicals.  It will be housed in a state-of–the-art facility with compression shelving and storage buildings to enable growth. Located on a natural preserve, the library is expected to be a center for workshops and residential visits by researchers.

The successful candidate will manage this private collection’s transition into a special library serving the needs of the broader scholarly community. S/he will perform original and copy cataloging for the collection backlog as well as future acquisitions using current codes and carrier standards, and be the liaison with outside firms contracted for assistance. S/he will make the library’s catalog and selected materials accessible in multiple formats, and work with the foundation’s board to plan the library’s future.

    ALA-accredited Masters’ degree in Library and Information Science;

Hoover Institution Archives: East Asia Collections Project Archivist

The Hoover Institution Archives is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic archivist with language skills in Chinese and/or Japanese to work on the arrangement and description of collections related to twentieth century East Asian history.  This position will be a full-time fixed-term appointment for a period of two years.

Duties and Responsibilities

•    Coordinate the arrangement, appraisal, and description of large, complex archival collections according to professional standards and current archival procedures. Analyze problems and recommend solutions, displaying a high degree of initiative, originality, and judgment in applying archival principles and procedures to complex and unique collections.
•    Participate in the formulation and implementation of project planning, management, and work flow; determine project goals and schedules; and survey archival holdings to identify materials in need of additional attention. Assist with the development of procedures and the establishment of work flows to address the backlog of unprocessed collections in Chinese and/or Japanese.
•    Search local and national databases for background information on individuals and archival materials in Chinese and/or Japanese. Prepare original collection description including abstracts, finding aids, metadata, EAD encoding, and other descriptive tools.
•    Conduct preservation assessments to determine appropriate preservation treatments and archival storage decisions, and provide high-level, in-depth reference and research assistance.
•    Provide high-level, in-depth reference and research assistance in multiple languages during daily shifts at the Archives public service desk and remotely by phone, email, or social media.
•    Collect and maintain statistics, reports, and other metrics to improve processing, preservation, and reference functions.

Qualifications

•    M.L.S. from an A.L.A.-accredited library school or M.A. with an archival concentration, archival management certificate, or related subject specialty, or equivalent degree
•    Reading and writing knowledge in English as well as Chinese and/or Japanese
•    Ability to read traditional Chinese characters
•    Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, acting with initiative, good judgment, and problem solving skills.

Selection Criteria:

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
Under the general direction of the Head, Technical Services, and of the Chinese Language Librarian, provides bibliographic control for large collections of rare and semi-rare Chinese resources held in the UBC Rare Books and Special Collections Library (RBSCL). Creates bibliographic records in national databases according to cataloguing standards developed for rare materials; imports records into UBC’s local catalogue; enriches data in imported and existing records; performs or supervises complex holdings and item maintenance; provides guidance to other project and staff cataloguers, and refers straightforward copy cataloguing work to them.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited program in North America, or the equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience carrying out original cataloguing and authority work on Chinese materials, using online bibliographic systems (preferably OCLC Connexion and ExLibris Voyager)
  • Native or near native level of English and Chinese languages (including knowledge of traditional & simplified Chinese characters)
  • Full knowledge of the Pinyin system of Chinese romanization
  • Knowledge of cataloguing/metadata standards and reference tools, including RDA, AACR2, and Cataloging Guidelines for Creating Chinese Rare Book Records in Machine-Readable Form
  • Familiarity with LCRI, LCSH, LC Classification Schedules, LC-PCC & CONSER cataloguing guidelines and policy statements
  • Good computer skills, including word-processing for English and Chinese, as well as knowledge of bibliographic databases

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Head, Technical Services. Works closely with the Chinese Language Librarian (Asian Library), the Principal Bibliographer (Technical Services), and with librarians and staff in the Rare Books and Special Collections Library. Interacts with Digital Services librarians and staff involved in digitizing Chinese rare materials. Supervises library assistants and students in cataloguing and associated duties. Consults with colleagues as required.

DUTIES:
  • Provides original cataloguing as well as complex copy-cataloguing for rare and semi-rare Chinese materials following national standards (Cataloging Guidelines for Creating Chinese Rare Book Records in Machine-Readable Form) as well as local policies.

The Columbia University Libraries invite nominations and applications for the position of Chinese Cataloger.

Under the general direction of the Head of Technical Services, the Chinese Cataloger provides bibliographic control over Chinese resources in all formats acquired by the Columbia University Libraries by creating bibliographic and authority records in national databases and importing them into Columbia's local catalog and other repositories. The Chinese Cataloger also performs complex database maintenance and data enrichment on existing records.  S/he is expected to keep abreast of new and emerging cataloging and metadata practices and tools, and actively participates in local and external professional activities.
Major Responsibilities: 
1. Provide original cataloging as well as complex copy-cataloging for Chinese materials in all formats following national standards as well as local policies.

• Good computer skills, including word-processing for English and Chinese, as well as knowledge of bibliographic databases.
• Excellent collegial, interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred:
• Original cataloging and authority work experience using bibliographic utility (e.g., OCLC Connexion) and local library systems in North American libraries.
• Knowledge of cataloging issues for East Asian materials and/or experience in working with East Asian collections.
• Experience in batch processing of bibliographic records and metadata.
• Good organization and project management skills.

The C.V. Starr East Asian Library is one of the major collections for the study of East Asia in the United States with over 1 million volumes/pieces of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, and Western language materials and over 8,500 periodical titles.
