Claremont Colleges Library: Head of the Asian Library



The Claremont Colleges, a distinguished consortium of five undergraduate liberal arts colleges and two graduate institutions located just east of Los Angeles, California, seeks an energetic, innovative, and productive Head of the Asian Library (HAL) for the Claremont Colleges Library.

Reporting to the Director of Special Collections and Libraries, the HAL will be forward-thinking in developing information resources and services that ensure that the Asian Library meets the current research, teaching, and learning needs of the Claremont Colleges’ faculty, students, and staff.  The successful candidate will bring vision, enthusiasm, analytical skills, and deep academic interest in Asia to this position.

The HAL will serve as the leader and spokesperson for the Asian Library within the Claremont Colleges Consortium.  As the library’s leading subject expert on Asia, the HAL will seize this opportunity to transform the Asian Library from a traditional, print collections-focused unit into a vibrant technology-enabled research, teaching, and learning space.  Our new Asian Library will feature energetic services, collaborative spaces, new technologies, and demand-driven subject and language information resources that support current research, teaching, and learning, a critical initiative in the library’s new strategic plan.  The HAL will make faculty and student engagement in the Asian Library a top priority.

Requirements include an MLIS from an ALA accredited program or equivalent education and experience, at least three years of professional level experience providing library services in higher education, English and Asian language skills, and academic work relating to Asia or deep knowledge of Asian Studies as an academic discipline.

Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library
The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library (EAL) is one of the major research libraries for East Asian Studies in North America. It has a staff of 14 employees, as well as a large number of student assistants. It has a collection budget of approximately $1 million with a collection of almost 600,000 volumes, and also holds resources in electronic, multi-media and other formats. It has growing digital collections and supports teaching, learning and research in East Asian studies on all campuses of the university. The Library began with a collection of rare materials acquired from China in the 1930's. This special collection is now known as the Mu Collection.

The Opportunity
The University of Toronto Libraries seeks an innovative library leader for its Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library (EAL). The EAL has a strong history of engagement and collaboration with faculty, students and the wider community. The EAL has a significant number of international relationships; and supports scholarship in a key area of focus for the University of Toronto. Building on the EAL’s success and partnerships, the Director will position the library as a recognized leader in delivering scholarly, user focused programs and initiatives. The Director will communicate with stakeholders, partners and potential donors on a national and international level. Stewarding collections through endowments and gifts is critical to this position. The Director will oversee all aspects of the library’s daily operations, leading a team of East Asian specialists. The Director will plan strategically to anticipate future library and user requirements, proactively developing creative new services and building collections that meet our users’ changing needs.

Required Qualifications:

• Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) or equivalent ALA-accredited degree
• A strong academic background in East Asian Studies
• Excellent reading, writing and verbal skills in both English and at least one Asian language related to the EAL collections (Chinese, Korean, Japanese)
• Relevant administrative, managerial and supervisory experience in an academic library setting
• Proven leadership, coaching and mentoring skills
• Ability to motivate, build trust and inspire a multifunctional team
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing innovative user services and technologies in a library setting
• Outstanding commitment to service excellence; proactive and user-focused
• In-depth knowledge of developments and current trends in higher education that affect research libraries, the scholarly research cycle and teaching and learning
• Excellent knowledge related to issues and trends in Asian libraries in North America and beyond
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work with others in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience related to licensing of electronic resources
• Relevant experience managing in a unionized environment
• A Doctoral or a second Master’s degree relevant to East Asian Studies

Salary and Terms of Appointment:
This is a continuing appointment (Permanent Status Stream) position to be filled at the Librarian III level.

DUTIES:
The Reference Librarian develops and manages Library collections in the Asian Division. Reviews a variety of brochures, catalogs, journals and other sources of items for possible acquisition in order to develop collections in areas of subject or geographic responsibility. Assists senior reference staff in determining the quality and usefulness of collection materials and in developing strategies for the organization, preservation, and service of materials. Provides reference and instructional services to individual researchers and groups. Provides in-person and telephone reference service in the Asian Division reading room. Responds orally or in writing to inquiries related to assigned field of responsibility. Coordinates the acquisition of items that are of limited technical complexity. Consults acquisition policies to determine appropriate acquisitions. Maintains liaison with acquisition librarians and other recommending officers and subject specialists. Assists in preparing research guides and finding aids and assists senior librarians in revising or updating research materials.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of library science.

Cleveland Museum of Art: Art Bibliographer, Asian Languages

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Ingalls Library and Museum Archives seeks qualified candidates for its Art Bibliographer – Asian Languages position.  The Art Bibliographer— Asian Languages works in conjunction with the Director of Library and Archives and the Acquisitions team to ensure the development of the Ingalls Library collection in accordance with the written Collection Development Policy and through established relationships with vendors world-wide. The position is responsible for the identification and selection of books and other intellectual materials in Asian languages for the museum library.  Typical duties include working on matters pertaining to selection of materials and overall collection development including establishing book selection policy and criteria for acquisitions based on knowledge of the literature and needs of current and future researchers; maintains primary responsibility for the library’s acquisition of new materials in Asian languages through established relationships with key vendors; and assists with the receipt and processing of all Asian language gifts, exchanges, and transfer materials in all formats including evaluation of materials for relevance to collection.

Master's degree in Library Science (M.L.S.) from an ALA accredited program required.  Knowledge of art historical literature.  Foreign language fluency in either Chinese or Japanese required; reading knowledge of Korean and whichever of Chinese or Japanese where fluency is lacking.  Prior experience working in an academic or research library, preferably in an acquisitions department, and familiarity with integrated library systems and OCLC are desirable.  Excellent research, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated organizational, decision-making and problem-solving skills including the ability to create policy; supervise staff, interns, and volunteers; prioritize and manage workflow, projects and multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and solving problems in a dynamic environment.   Must have experience developing and managing relationships with vendors, publishers and interface providers. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with institutional departments, community partners and potential donors. 

The Ingalls Library is one of the largest art research libraries in the United States with over 496,000 Volumes and a staff of 22. The library provides assistance to anyone seeking information on art and offers specialized workshops on research resources and techniques. The library’s mission is to support  the museum’s current and future collections, research, exhibitions, publications, lectures, programs and activities. The Museum Archives’ mission is to preserve records that document the origins, development, achievements, and activities of the museum and to administrate the museum’s records management program.

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
The Head, Asian Library provides strategic leadership in developing facilities, collections and services in the Asian Library, including a growing range of community partnerships. The Asian Library, located in UBC’s Asian Centre, houses collections in major Asian languages - including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indic, and a growing Persian collection- in support of UBC’s Asian programs and initiatives. It provides access to a growing number of electronic resources and databases in Asian languages as well as digitized archives. The Asian Library also provides key supports for UBC’s community and international engagement strategies via its resources, programming, staff expertise, external partnerships and an increasingly robust digital presence.
Within the context of a changing environment, the Head will facilitate the planning for and implementation of new spaces, collections, services and programs to meet users’ evolving needs. The Head fosters collaborative relationships with internal library stakeholders, faculty and students, campus departments, and individuals and organizations within BC, North America and throughout Asia. Stewarding substantial collections, including Asian Library’s rare collections, through endowments, gifts, and effective processes is critical to this position. An outreach focus with prospects for co- programming with faculty, campus departments and community groups is a growing direction. Creating a highly engaged, productive and supportive environment for staff is essential.
The Asian Library is due for renewal under the University’s capital campaign, so the ability to envision and implement a dynamic physical environment is essential along with an ability to build a growing suite of digital collections. Working with Library Development the Head encourages and cultivates close relations with community partners, international organizations, and donors. The nature and scope of responsibilities for this and other library positions are expected to change as the Library organization continually evolves.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
• A graduate degree in Library Science and an academic background in a subject and language area within the scope of the Asian Library
• Excellent reading, writing and spoken skills in at least one major Asian language related to Asian Library collections and programs, and complete fluency in English
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
• Demonstrated effective managerial experience including supervising a staff of librarians, support staff and student workers
• Proven leadership and experience with projects, budget management and planning; and significant collaborations within a network of internal and external partnerships
• Must be familiar with developments in North American and other Asian libraries, digital library developments and scholarly and academic publishing throughout Asia, and be able to apply that familiarity to the operations of Asian Library
• Knowledge of information technology in support of Asian languages and a broad knowledge of Asian cultures, sources, publishing, and print and electronic distribution
• Must be able to represent the Asian Library and University through professional service and affiliations, locally and internationally, and in fund-raising

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Head of the Asian Library works under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian responsible for Asian Library. The Head consults with the AUL Collections for matters concerning collections building, the manager of Central Technical Services on ordering and processing and with the Head of Rare Books and Special Collections, Finance and Facilities Manager, Director of Library Digital Initiatives, AUL for Library Systems and Technology and Director of Library Human Resources for interrelated areas. The Head cooperates with the heads of other branches and divisions in the provision of services. The Head supports the University Librarian and Library Development in fund raising initiatives.

The Head liaises with faculty members and unit heads responsible for subjects in the Department of Asian Studies, directors of centres such as the Institute for Asian Research, and with other campus units responsible for implementing UBC’s Asian and international programs. In a community outreach role, the Head interacts with a wide variety of individuals and organizations.

DUTIES:
1. Positions the Asian Library, on and beyond campus, as a recognized leader and collaborator in the provision of teaching, scholarly and community-based collections, services and programming.
2. Oversees the operations of Asian Library so that it can successfully fulfil its mission within the Library’s strategic context. Manages the necessary resources and technology. Sets and implements divisional priorities, allocating funds, human resources and time, and controlling expenditures.
3. Assesses opportunities for new collections and services by consulting with students, staff, faculty and community members; maintains liaison with faculty, campus centres, participating in departmental and faculty meetings. Liaises closely with UBC’s programs for international students and scholars to ensure appropriate supports are provided.
4. Ensures responsive interactions with Asian communities and allied organizations, working locally and internationally to identify and implement mutual goals. Seeks and develops partnerships in fulfilment of the Library’s strategic objectives.
5. Works with the University Librarian, members of the Library Executive and Library Development in fund raising initiatives and participates in the preparation of grant requests and grant program fulfilment.
6. Plays a direct and active role in capital planning and implementation, including working with Library Facilities as client lead for building renovation or construction projects.
7. Coordinates development of collections in the Asian languages and oversees budget allocations for print and electronic materials, working with the AUL Collections, Library Digital Initiatives and bibliographers. Ensures faculty and unit heads are consulted about collection development.
8. Collaborates within and beyond the Library to build Asian digital collections, including a robust web presence.
9. Oversees physical stewardship of collections and works with Central Technical Services to ensure ordering and cataloguing of Asian materials are completed effectively and efficiently.
10. Collaborates with others, including the Irving K Barber Learning Centre, Library Development and Communications, in developing programming, events and exhibits of interest to campus or community.
11. Creates an inspiring, supportive and engaged work environment for staff. Plans for staff development and training by determining the needs of the unit including individual staff needs. Allocates time for training and development.
12. Conducts performance and merit reviews and takes part in annual goal-setting.
13. Participates in the management of the Library as a member of the University Librarian’s Advisory Council and other committees and working groups as required.
14. Represents UBC Library in a variety of internal and external settings, including within East Asian library networks. Participates in a wide variety of professional and university wide initiatives.
15. Performs other duties related to the requirements of the position.

Terms of Appointment and Salary:
This position will be filled as a full time ongoing position with a five year administrative term as Head, Asian Library (renewable). If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Ingalls Library and Museum Archives seeks qualified candidates for its Art Bibliographer – Asian Languages position. The Art Bibliographer— Asian Languages works in conjunction with the Director of Library and Archives to ensure the development of the Ingalls Library collection in accordance with the written Collection Development Policy and through established relationships with vendors world-wide. The position is responsible for the identification and selection of books and other intellectual materials in Asian languages for the museum library. Typical duties include working on matters pertaining to selection of materials and overall collection development including establishing book selection policy and criteria for acquisitions based on knowledge of the literature and needs of current and future researchers; maintains primary responsibility for the library’s acquisition of new materials in Asian languages through established relationships with key vendors; and assists with the receipt and processing of all Asian language gifts, exchanges, and transfer materials in all formats including evaluation of materials for relevance to collection.

A Master’s degree (M.A.) or Ph.D in art history required. Knowledge of art historical literature. Foreign language fluency in either Chinese or Japanese required; reading knowledge of Korean and whichever of Chinese or Japanese where fluency is lacking. Master's degree in Library Science (M.L.S.) from an ALA accredited program preferred. Prior experience working in an academic or research library, preferably in an acquisitions department, and familiarity with integrated library systems and OCLC are desirable. Excellent research, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated organizational, decision-making and problem-solving skills including the ability to create policy; supervise staff, interns, and volunteers; prioritize and manage workflow, projects and multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and solving problems in a dynamic environment. Must have experience developing and managing relationships with vendors, publishers and interface providers. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with institutional departments, community partners and potential donors.

The British Library: Head of Asian & African Studies

Devonshire Arts and Heritage is delighted to be recruiting for a Head of Asian and African Studies for an internationally renowned library in London.

The Library contains over 150 million items including manuscripts, printed books, newspapers, maps, photographs, stamps, sound recordings, prints, drawings and ephemera from all over the World. The post holder has overall management responsibility for a total of 21 specialist curatorial staff; 6 of which will be direct reports.

The post is permanent and full time. First stage interviews will take place on the first week of March, so you must be fully available then, and if successful be available to start within a reasonable amount of time after that.

The Post Holder Will:

•    Motivate, build trust, inspire and ultimately lead a team of Asian and African specialists
•    Have the ability to identify what is important and achievable for the curatorial team to conserve the collection, in order for it to continue being the best of its kind
•    Support and mentor team members through regular one to one and group meetings
•    Continue to build and strengthen relationships with other internal departments
•    Develop service propositions to exploit the collections across a range of formats, seeking and brokering partnerships with other libraries, research institutions and technology partners as appropriate
•    Act as an effective advocate for the Library and communicate with stakeholders nationally and internationally
•    Leading negotiations re: major acquisitions of heritage and archival material, liaising with the Development Office, Communications etc., as appropriate
•    Be able to make strategic decisions,  implement and oversee the completion of plans accordingly
•    Develop and implement innovative and creative approaches to strengthen the Library’s user experience

Essential Requirements Include:

•    First degree level qualification or above in a relevant discipline or subject
•    Exemplary collection management experience
•    You must have a proven area of academic and practical expertise relevant to the collection
•    Previous employment experience in a library, museum, academic institution or in the fine art/antiquities sector
•    Experience in leading and overseeing the development of corporate plans, strategies and programmes
•    Knowledge of new developments in digitisation and emerging research trends and methodologies
•    Experience of budgetary and financial management
•    Oral and written fluency in the English language
•    Information technology skills, including web-based skills
•    Ability to travel for work purposes as and when required


Salary:  £47,246-£54,871 depending on experience + wonderful benefits.
